How will the internet start "locking down"?

This was an asinine comment by the OP that you replied to.

Joe Hewitt said that the App Store is setting a precedent that the Store for a particular handheld device needs to have a review process. Other companies are following suit. IF this process becomes more and more common then the platforms suffer due to the lack of innovative fun new pieces of software.

The Internet isn't locked down because anyone can purchase a server or rent one toss it on the internet and run custom software. You can distribute your information, you can sell your products, you can link friends together without another company telling you yes or no (like the App Store). It's open.

That's what Joe Hewitt likes about the internet. The openness. The close mindedness of the App Store is what turned him off to the development process.

And losing him is huge. He's one of the biggest developers for the platform. More people use Facebook I think than just about any third party application.

Can you rephrase that sentence? I have no clue what you just said (I suspect you meant sales rather than sells... sells = verb, sales = plural noun).

And for some reason it is bugging me and I want to know what you meant, but I really can't parse your grammar there.

Should the first part be "Their sales are not on that much"? and what is in those computers and what has that got to do with their sales not being on that much?

As I said, I'm really completely confused by that sentence.

Blame my English professor...I do. And M$ Word

Asus produces 30% of consumer motherboards. Apple buys asus motherboards. Many apple PCs run ASUS hardware. So while ASUS doesn't sale the most completed PCs they get their product out their. And they currently have the best Completed PCs in terms of reliability.

Apple is at the core a software company.

No, Apple is a hardware company.

Both of you are wrong, Apple is a vertical systems integrator and vendor.

Apple is a marketing company above all else.

The truth is Apple is a Systems Company.

    :)

So, the way it is now, you buy Photoshop for around $650 and after 18 months you can upgrade for $190. Total: $840 for 36 months, plus you still have your software to use for as long as you want if you choose not to upgrade anymore...

So, $35 x 36 months = $1260 and after the 36 months finnish, you have nothing...

I don't see a big advantage here, unless you only use photoshop in a few projects a year... I don't know anyone who does that, tho...

The big advantage here isn't for you. ;)

After reading this article (http://gizmodo.com/343246/what-to-expect-at-macworld-2008-and-why-we-think-it-will-bigger-than-usual) I think that it's entirely possible that Apple are altering their branding. Also the lack of an Apple logo could be explained by the fact that everyone at the expo would recognise it as them anyway and it adds to the air of secrecy and mystery that they love to use in their marketing.

oh yes, absolutely no sign of an Apple logo here....

For $500 you can buy a MacMini preinstalled with OSX Leopard which will probably (likely) come with virtualization without the need for a Windows partition.

Windows Vista looks more and more like it will totally lose the war against Leopard.

2007 is going to be the year when OSX gains huge momentum over Windows and begins to regain its throne as the most popular OS.

The issue with Verizon (and probably other carriers) isn't a "mother may I..." issue of sending the updates over 3G, the issue is probably exempting the OS updates from any transfer caps.

In other words, to not have the 500MB iOS update apply to the 200MB or 2GB/mo or 5GB/mo data cap. This might require Apple to grease the skids with a little cash for Verizon and AT&T, or limit updates to WiFi only.

That said, Apple in general needs to get a better handle on their update package sizes. I've got 3 Macs, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones on my home internet connection. Its 300-500MB (occasionally more) per Mac each time Apple releases a OSX point release (about every other month), 500MB for each iOS update (every other month) times four devices. So I'm looking at a maximum of 3.2GB of just Apple updates each month. This doesn't include updating iTunes, iPhoto, MS Office, etc.

I glad you guys enjoyed this. I figured that exercise was the perfect counter to that neo-liberal nonsense that 5pt posted.

My FCS3 install spans 7 DVDs and weighs in around 50gb. FCPX as a stand alone app will be ~300mb, but they'll have to offer it on physical media if they plan on including all the extras that ship with the current suite. I'm sure it'll be $999 full, or $299 upgrade for the full studio. At least I hope so. Here I stand, cash in hand!

I really can't wait to see what happens with Logic.

How comes Walmart control so much of the US retail market, yet everyone here hates them and refuses to shop there? They might not be ethical, they might bully suppliers, they might put small stores out of business but they keep prices down and everyone wants to pay less for everything.

Its similar with Tesco in the UK, they might not be as dominant as Walmart in the US but they aren't that far off it. The subject that normally comes up in the UK is the prices the supermarkets pay to farmers. Everyone says its shocking and that they are bullying the farmers, yet everyone is more than happy to pay less and less for farm produce.

I don't see how what Walmart does or says about this really matters. They ain't going to stop selling dvds as they won't want to lose the profit, if it gets to the point where they're not making enough profit they will just drop them on the spot. More likely is that they will use it as a bargaining chip to get better prices on dvds so they can increase profits further.

I can't see it being an issue in the UK, or the rest of the EU. The monopoly and competition rules of the EU are pretty strict and they don't give a damn how big the company is - Bill Gates will testify to this, I think Microsoft had been fined about $500million the last time I checked for breaking the rules on competition.

I read books off electronic devices all the time. The first machine I used was the Nokia 9500

    http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/i/z/rv/2004/09/nokia-9300-400x480.jpg

    That's actually a Nokia 9300 but it's similar.

Having the right software is crucial. It needs to be tweakable to show the text at exactly the right font size.

I found it easier to hold the phone vertically not horizionally, and read the text like a vertical newspaper column.

The way the page is turned is crucial too.

Some software can scroll it automatically for you (you pickthe scroll speed, but sometimes it's just a little too fast or a little too slow)- thats suitable for undemanding books or ones where you can read at the same rate for all the way, but for most books manual turn is preferable.

The button to click to turn pages has to fall under your thumb or the right finger to make it an automatic action. For technical books, you need to be able to scroll back and forwards without changing your hand grip.

An unobtrusive system of marking your place, making notes, or marking paragraphs that you want to return to later is also important, but not always available.

When I got fed up with the Nokia 9500 being too big, (and I broke mine) I brought the O2 XDA Mini S

    http://www.mobiles.co.uk/cache/2006-07-20-18-06-20/b582200e-0a96-4845-9f49-0ba9d7df606d/o2-xda-mini-s.jpg

It has a tiny screen, 1.5 inches x 2.25 inches (45mm x 65mm) which is getting to be about the same size as the iPod video but I can still read books on it, and have read about 20 so far. I'm very short sighted but I can read it without glasses - just hold it a bit closer.

That tiny screen is probably too small for most people, so I hope Apple's is a bit bigger.

I have a friend who uses his old Palm PDA solely for reading - never mind all the pda functions - he only uses it for reading ebooks.

I wouldn't know who Joe Hewitt is without the iPhone app. Enjoy this final moment of attention Joe, you are now nearly irrelevant. I wonder how many Twitter followers he's lost in the last 24 hours...

because having a ton of twitter followers is completely relevant to this discussion. That has to be one of the stupidest comments today.
