Cost aside for the moment, it's Microsoft's decision to sell such a bewildering number of versions that I find so remarkable.
I agree, though this (if true) makes that less of a real issue.
The three retail editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate) of Windows Vista will ship on the same DVD. The features of the Home Premium and Ultimate editions may be "unlocked" at any time by purchasing a one-time upgrade license through a Control Panel tool called Windows Anytime Upgrade. The Business edition will also be upgradable to Ultimate. Such licenses will be sold by Microsoft's partners and OEMs, but not directly by Microsoft.
This is a change from XP where there was no good way to go "pro" if you already had "Home" installed, even though they had promised such a path during the beta.

...So it looks like the forthcoming Mac Pro's will have the same form factor as the previous Power Mac G5. Can't say that I'm against that decision - but I was secretly hoping for a new look. My Rev A Power Mac Dual 2Ghz is still doing just fine under my desk. In fact, it's gonna take something pretty crazy to get me to pull out the credit card for a new box. Nothing's got me that excited yet

If they put an iSight in the Cinema Displays and axe the stand alone iSight that would mean you would have to buy an ACD just to use the video stuff with the Powermac/Mac pro AND the mini.

No, it certainly isn't. It's proof that we're evolving (albeit, slowly).
I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. Humans are social creatures, we evolved being social to help us survive against great odds. People with Asperger's/autism do not understand simple social cues and are often at a loss in situations where one should read subtext rather than what is literally said.
It's less an evolution than a branching off. What will happen when the world no longer requires mathematical savants to programme etc? These people will die out.
A study was done which showed that since the advent of online dating reported cases of people on the autistic spectrum increased; it's thought that the people who spent most of their time online were able to find partners and procreate, without having to do the whole rigmarole of courting, flirting, etc.
I'll see if I can find it, but I wouldn't boast about having Asperger's, it's better to boast about being an NT (Myers-Briggs personality type)

Can you imagine what this wireless zuneing feature will be like in the real world? I bet they haven't come up with a way to make the wireless feature only try talking to the zune you want it to, so it'll try talking to any other zune within the proximity of the wireless transmission capability.
You'll be walking down a crowded street in a hurry trying to get your music playing when all of a sudden a box will pop up over your interface "User s8trBoi wants to send you the song "Skate or Die" by "The Snotty Adolescent Band." Do you want to accept?" You think wtf? Then suddenly it disappears and a new box pops up that says "Connection Lost, would you like to try again? [retry] [cancel] [stop] [close zuneing port]" After this keeps happening you click [close zuneing port], which turns off the wireless capability on your zune. Then you can't share songs anymore, and the pref to turn it back on will be buried under a complex interface. So the wireless capability will be used for all of a week for most people.
Then maybe spammers will realize that this is a whole new fertile ground for their sludge. So you'll be walking down the street and suddenly a box will pop up over your interface that says "User "*BUY CHEAP VIAGRA*" wants to send you the song "ONLY 5 DOLLARS PER BOTTLE!!!" by "WWW.WE-R-SPAM.COM" Do you want to accept?"
Zune sounds like a great new world. Thanks Microsoft.
Probably the best post I ever read. Informative, funny, truthful.

Well, that is every online game, if we're being honest. Doesn't matter what you play, there are going to be people out there who just want to ruin the experience for others. It sucks, but it is the sad reality of the online world these days. The Halo community, in my opinion, is quite good and friendly, but it doesn't take but a very small group of individuals to ruin it. My only suggestion is to play with as many friends or nice players that you know. I have a handful of real-life friends who play Halo, but I also won't hesitate to add someone who I enjoyed playing with.
I used to play a TON of Rocket Race in Halo 3. It was a crazy fun gametype, but it was also very easy to ruin for everyone, if you were that kind of person. So, I just started adding people to my friends list every chance I got when I had fun playing with people. Pretty soon, I had tons of people online who I could play with. We would fill up the lobby with actual, good players, thus ending any chance of griefing right from the start. I won't touch competitive Matchmaking any more unless I have enough people I know playing to fill up our team. Partly because of jerks, but mostly because it is just more fun when you have a team of people you know, and enjoy playing with.
Not to be an @$$ but I am so tired of that pat answer of "you just need to play with friends'. It's kind of like the answer you get when you call tech support after you spent days googling for the answer to your problem, and they start with "Did you try turning it on & off?" ;) I know they are just doing their job, but it's obviousness is still something you're tired of hearing.
Playing with friends is not always a constant option, sometimes you have to bite the proverbial bullet & play with randoms. I know for me, it is a necessity because I need to badly improve my skills. Have randoms tell me I suck is a no biggie, after all they don't say much when I own them. Letting your friends down cause you aren't that good does suck.
What also sucks, and I still stick with my call,is that the Halo community contains the largest number of @$$hats to ever discover a microphone. From the well documented You Tube video of random players verbally harassing a gay player before a match even starts. To the almost pathetic way some players are addicted to the 'N' word. To the now immortal play style of wanting to be the only player who gets the best weapon or vehicle, and are willing to kill teammates to get it.
Don't get me wrong, players use of the 'n' word isn't exclusive to Halo. I would say it was actually worse in Rainbow 6, but that's not the point. I believe that there's just something about Halo that brings out the worst in players. I'm reminded of the story of Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson the former UFC champ who won't play Halo online because of the crap on Halo. I used to play quite a bit of CoD MW2. When the Halo community as a whole thought the game was crap, it wasn't too bad. When they changed their mind, the game made it's hastier descent into the slums it's in now.
I know it is every game on every system that has more than it's share of @$$hats, that goes without saying. I just believe ( and from reading some of the comments on Kotaku about the recent 1 day bannings of some players for abusing farming in Reach ) that the Halo community has more than it's share of people who's manhood is defined by playing online from the relative safety of their bedroom.

Thanks for the explanation, but can you tell us what type of actions the 4-5 finger gestures perform? Very curious...
Also, does this update require all of the data to be re-sync'd? I HATE when that happens...
You can 4~5 fingers swipe left and right to switch to another app or swipe up and down to open up and close down the multitasking bar, and finally you can pinch in using 4~5 fingers to go to the home screen.
Especially, I love the swipe left/right function. You can switch between apps really quickly. I think that is the real multitasking.
UPDATE : There's an video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxVd1jDc_Y4) for that.
UPDATE 2 : The gestures work on both iPad and iPad 2.
For your information, each action can be done with either 4 or 5 fingers. The results are same. This means, you cannot use each for the different actions. (and you cannot define the actions. they are fixed by Apple, Inc.)
The answer for your last question is no, you don't have to re-sync all your data, music, photos and apps. The iPad doesn't loose any data during the update, so don't worry.

You are right!
Nothing new here!
I'm really looking forward to see what's happening on 10th August, even if I am not in the market for new gear, except for a new iPod.
A week to go. Nice.
The 10th? What happens on the 10th? *glares hungrily*

If you think about it, it's not all too surprising that some of these "professionals" are getting so worked up and sulky over this release.
And who, exactly, are you talking about?
All I've seen are a few anonymous comments on this message board. Who are those people? Are they pros? I don't know who they are. Do you know?
Funny how you've developed a whole theory about "professionals" and yet you haven't proved in any way that any pros said what you claimed they said. I've read that the crowd at the show seemed to really love it.
So if you're going to come here and claim you've heard people saying the exact opposite of the news report then you really need to explain where you heard that and who was saying it.

If Apple OC doesn't come up with a solid reason as to why Canada or the US need to maintain a large standing military with enormous costs (such as threat level etc.) I am going to call troll.
Cheers,
Ahmed
I can. The US, and Canada to a lesser extent, have a great many commercial interests all over the world. Some of these are in regions where the local people might be inclined at some point to arbitrarily and summarily upend the status quo and just take over carefully developed and husbanded resources or simply fail to recognise established rights and contracts. The parties involved in these enterprises are typically very wealthy individuals or groups who support the government officials who keep the military maintained in good condition to enforce proper capitalism across international borders.
As a side benefit, the "military industrial complex" is so deeply entangled in the domestic economy that serious cuts to its budget could spell financial disaster for dozens or hundreds of American communities (the situation is probably less tenuous in Canada).

Ahmed

Anyone get the new 'Search' on their 5G ? I have updated iTunes and done the iPod update. Its probably not even a feature I will use much but it's a shame it's not included in the update.
Any luck with the games on a current 5G ? Would be quite nice to have PacMan

That's not how I understood what he said at all,he put "professional" in quotes because he was being sarcastic,to me he meant that if someone is worried about the fact that more people can now operate a software because it's simpler to use/more affordable then they must not be a real pro because a real pro wouldn't worry about such things, they know that they have the creativity and experience that sets them appart.
But the ****ing public doesn't get this. Everyone loves Friday by Rebecca Black - explain that.

Fortune reports (http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/22/technology/apple_beatles_ipod.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2006112708) that Apple may be close to bringing the Beatles music catalog online exclusively through iTunes.
Other music stores such as MSN and Rhapsody have reportedly courted the Beatles over the years, but with little success. David Munns, head of EMI North America, was recently cited as saying that the Beatles would be available online "soon".
The details of the deal are still being worked out, according to the article:
As Fortune went to press, numerous deal points were still being hammered out. According to a music industry executive apprised of the talks, the parties were discussing how lengthy a window of exclusivity iTunes might get and how many tens of millions of dollars Jobs - who is said to be personally involved in the discussions - will commit to an advance for the band and marketing costs.
If a deal is established, this would be interesting conclusion to a history of legal disputes between Apple Computer and Apple Corps (Beatles company). The most recent outcome (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/05/20060508075122.shtml) favored Apple Computer's use of the Apple logo in association with the iTunes store.
